How To Receive a Miracle: 10 Faith Actions You Can Take Today

How to Receive a Miracle

Want to know how to receive a miracle? Find out what actions you can take to participate in His plan for you.

If you need a miracle today, you need to know this: Miracles are not just hit-or-miss. You can tap into a miracle. God doesn’t just sometimes decide to do a miracle, and sometimes not to. No. He is always ready to do a miracle in your life.

Here’s the key.

You are not a spectator. You are an active participant!

If you need a miracle in your life—get off the couch, get involved and receive your miracle with these 10 faith actions you can take today.

Action Step No. 1: Worship the Lord Every Morning

“His praise will always be on my lips.” –Psalm 34:1 (NIV)

Some people think as long as they love God and are faithful to Him, the blessings will flow in. But worshipping and praising the Lord put everything in the proper perspective. It puts God at the head of your life and circumstances. It announces to the world, the devil and all your troubles that you are in the hands of Almighty God, and you know it, trust it and have faith to receive a miracle.

That’s why Kenneth Copeland says, “Praise is the big gun of faith.”

That’s how Paul and Silas received deliverance from prison. Instead of begging and pleading with God, or complaining about their situation, Paul and Silas “were praying and singing hymns to God” (Acts 16:25, NIV). The result? “All the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose” (verse 26, NIV). All the doors. Every chain. All because of worshipping and praising God.

Learn how to unleash the power of praise and thanksgiving for miracles HERE.

Kenneth Hagin once shared a testimony of a missionary who had contracted smallpox before there was a vaccine, at a time when it was often fatal. As she prayed, the Lord gave her a vision of a scale with prayer on one side and praise on the other. He said, “When your praises equal your prayers, you will be healed.”

She spent two days doing nothing but praising God. She didn’t ask Him for anything. At the end of the two days, she was completely healed.

That’s how you receive a miracle!

Action Step No. 2: Make a Forgiveness List

“And whenever you stand praying, forgive.” –Mark 11:25 (ESV)

Think you can receive a miracle with bitterness in your heart? Think again.

If you need a miracle—don’t delay!—sit down and make a forgiveness list today. Get quiet before the Lord and ask Him to reveal to you anyone you haven’t forgiven in your life (this could go way back). Write down everyone who comes to mind. It could be an entire group like a neighborhood, a church or a school.

There may be tiny little “nothings” on the list, but those are important, too! It’s the small foxes that ruin the vines. Then, ask God to help you forgive. It often takes supernatural help.

Find A 3-Step Plan for Total Forgiveness HERE.

From this day forward, keep your forgiveness list empty. Every time someone offends you, forgive immediately. This faith action could be the missing link to receive your miracle.

Action Step No. 3: Sharpen Your Listening Skills

“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” –Romans 8:14 (NIV)

God wants you to receive your miracle, and He has some special instructions for you. Can you hear Him? If you’re wrapped up in thinking about your troubles or needs, the noise may be loud enough to block out His still, small voice.

Be intentional about getting quiet before the Lord. Sharpen your listening skills and expect to hear from Him.

Keith Moore has seen many miracles in his life, and his advice is this: “If you want to see a miracle, you must first hear from Him.” This is the most critical step and one that many people try to skip. Then they wonder why they don’t see a manifestation in their lives.

When you hear from the Lord, He will give you an instruction—something He wants you to do to receive your miracle. That is always how God has worked.

When Jesus healed the man with leprosy, He said, “Stretch out your hand” (Matthew 12:13, NIV). When did the miracle happen exactly? When the man stretched out his hand. “Go, wash in the pool” (John 9:7, AMP). “Fill the jars with water” (John 2:7). “Pick up your mat, and walk” (John 5:8). Instruction always preceded a miracle.

Expect to hear from Him. Then, do whatever He tells you to do, and you will receive your miracle!

Action Step No. 4: Only Speak the Language of Faith

“He will have whatever he says.” –Mark 11:23 (NKJV)

If you need a miracle—or want to live in everyday victory—you’ve got to learn to only speak the language of faith. The Bible is clear that our words have power to release life, death and whatever we say. So, whatever you’re living in today is likely the result of yesterday’s words.

Find out how to stop sinking your own ship with your words HERE.

Until you reach the point of speaking faith every day, you need to do what Kenneth Copeland told Mylon Le Fevre to do years ago when Mylon was new to walking by faith.

Mylon was telling Kenneth all about his troubles, even though he said he was believing God to help him. Kenneth said to him, “Son, you need to learn the language of silence.”

Kenneth was telling him that until he could learn how to speak faith, he needed to keep quiet.

It’s advice Kenneth gives often. Jerry Savelle shares about what Kenneth said to him when he was first learning to walk by faith.

“Before God transformed my life, I asked Kenneth Copeland why nothing was working in my life, and he said, ‘Jerry, your problem is your big mouth. You need to learn the vocabulary of silence.’ And then he said, ‘If you can’t talk the Word, then shut up.’ Once I learned how to ‘bridle my tongue’ (James 3:1-9), things began to change in my life!”

You may already know about the importance of your words, but you will always have to be intentional about only speaking the language of faith.

Action Step No. 5: Don’t Take No for an Answer

“All the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen.” –2 Corinthians 1:20 (NKJV)

If you need a miracle, do you accept a bad report as final? If you need a miracle in your body and the doctor says, “You’re going to be on medication for life,” are you accepting it? Or do you fight?

It can be tempting to tuck your tail between your legs and walk away wondering why nothing ever works out. But that isn’t what we’ve been told to do! The next time you hear a no from the world when the Lord has already said, “Yes,” stop and consider your response.

Be willing and ready to fight for what’s yours in the spirit realm. You have a right to enjoy the promises of God, but they won’t just fall in your lap. Go after them today. God’s yes will always overcome every no. That’s what a miracle is!

Action Step No. 6: Refuse to Doubt

“Don’t be afraid; just believe.” –Mark 5:36 (NIV)

Once you take a stand against the world’s no, the devil will be right there pulling every trick out of his bag to get you to let go of your faith and grab on to fear and doubt. He’ll say, “You’re not going to get that miracle. You don’t deserve it. Remember how many times you’ve failed God.”

How do you receive a miracle? Refuse to entertain those doubt-filled thoughts. Instead, answer him and say, “Bless the Lord, I don’t get what I deserve. I get what Jesus bought for me. I get the mercy of God. I get a miracle!” That’s why, when Jairus received the news that his daughter had died, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe” (Mark 5:36, NIV). He knew that if Jairus stayed out of doubt and unbelief, the way would be clear for God to do a miracle. That’s a good word for all of us who are positioning ourselves for a miracle. No matter what the devil says, no matter what circumstances may say, no matter what our natural senses might try to tell us—if we’ll refuse to doubt, refuse to fear and keep on believing God, our miracle will surely come!

Action Step No. 7: Don’t Just Sit There—Do Something!

“Faith without works is dead.” –James 2:26 (NKJV)

As important as it is to resist doubt, faith alone won’t get the whole job done. You can’t just sit around believing on the inside and do nothing on the outside. For faith to come alive, you have to take action. If you’re waiting for a miracle today, don’t just sit there—take action! When Jesus performed His first miracle, John 2 tells us that He and His mother were attending a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the host ran out of wine. Mary looked to Jesus to do something about it. She was expecting a miracle when she turned to the servants and said, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”

Mylon Le Fevre can attest to this truth. When he first got saved, he had a massive amount of debt, and he knew God had told him, according to Romans 13:8, to get out of debt. So he met with a financial counselor who mapped everything out for him, including how much he would need to put aside each month.

Mylon put everything he had into getting out of debt. He didn’t eat out or purchase anything (he only bought the food he needed and paid his bills). Though the financial advisor said it would take five years and eight months, all of Mylon’s debt disappeared in 18 months! That’s one of the major keys to receiving a miracle. Whatever the Lord says to you—do it! When you take action, He will meet you there with a supernatural result.

Watch Kenneth Copeland teach you how to act on God’s Word to be healed.

Action Step No. 8: Plant the Word of God

“The seed is the word of God.” –Luke 8:11 (NKJV)

If you need a harvest today, the big question is, have you planted anything? To reap a spiritual harvest, you’ve got to plant the Word of God in your heart.

A lot of people try to skip that step. They try to believe for a miracle without spending enough time in the Word to change their hearts and minds. They just want to confess it with their mouths and have it instantly appear. But that won’t happen. It’s what we believe in our heart and say with our mouths that we receive.

If you don’t have enough faith yet to believe for the miracle you need, then you can get it. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17, NKJV). So, start planting the Word in your heart until faith for your miracle is born.

Action Step No. 9: Learn the Art of Waiting

“Do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” –Hebrews 6:12 (NKJV)

The difference between receiving a miracle and not receiving, often comes down to your willingness to wait. Faith and patience are the power twins. Patience keeps your faith strong until you cross the finish line.

Learn the biblical art of waiting! Develop the kind of patience that knows if you believed you received it—you have it.

Patience will guard you from your feelings and from watching the clock. Let patience have her perfect work. Patience comes and holds the door of faith open. Praise God! It won’t let the devil slam it. It won’t let anything shut it. It just keeps calling things that be not as though they were. It keeps acting as though it was already done.

Action Step No. 10: Expect the Impossible

“All things are possible to him who believes.” –Mark 9:23 (NKJV)

Did you know the spirit of expectancy is key to receiving your miracle? If you only see the natural realm of the possible as what is possible for you—that’s not faith! God works miracles because we believe! We could look at one miracle after another and see that truth in action.

  • In Mark 5:34, when the woman with the issue of blood receives her healing, Jesus says, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.”
  • In Luke 17:19, the leper is healed and made whole. Why? Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you.”
  • In Mark 10:52, blind Bartimaeus received the miracle of his sight restored. The reason? Jesus said, “Your faith has healed you.”

In every case, the faith of the people is credited with the receiving of a miracle. That’s your part—expecting the impossible. It opens the door for God’s power and allows a supernatural flow of the blessings of God into your life. If you need a miracle today, you can put these 10 faith actions to work in your life, and you will see what you’re believing for. It’s time to get in the game! Make God your focus, rather than your circumstances, and your miracle will come.

The Ephesians 1 Prayer

The Ephesians 1 Prayer For Discovering Your Identity in Christ

For Discovering Your Identity in Christ

Have you ever wondered what happened from the time Jesus was on the cross to when He sat down on the throne? More importantly, have you ever fully comprehended what He did for you personally in that span of time? His actions forever defined your identity as a believer—something many people wrestle with today.

For example, Galatians 2:20 tells us, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (NKJV).

Jesus died on our behalf, but this verse shows us that when we made Jesus our Lord, we partook of what He did for us. When He was crucified, spiritually speaking, we were crucified with Him; we died with Him; we were buried and made alive with Him; we were raised up together with Him, and we were seated in heavenly places together with Him.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:4-6, NKJV).

What’s more, 2 Corinthians 5:17 assures us that “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (KJV).

Becoming A New Creature in Christ

To illustrate the reality of this, Mark and Trina Hankins recently shared with Brother Copeland the testimony of their grandson Dylan who had a bone marrow transplant (stem cell transplant) a few years ago. Dylan’s brother Gavin was his donor. For four days they took blood from Gavin and gave it to Dylan. For the next three months, as Gavin’s stem cells were grafted into Dylan’s, he became a different person. At three weeks, medically in his blood, Dylan was 50% himself, and 50% Gavin. At three months, Dylan was 75% Gavin and only 25% himself. Today, Dylan is 100% Gavin. There’s nothing left of the cells that had leukemia and if you tested both boys’ blood for DNA, they would appear to be the same person.

So imagine what happens spiritually when you make Jesus the Lord of your life? You are transformed to being a new creature in Christ. And think about who your donor is—Jesus Himself! His blood doesn’t flow through your veins literally, but this is what people mean when they say we have Jesus’ blood flowing through our veins. Spiritually, we do! It’s part of our identity in Christ, something we find in God’s Word.

Imagine finding your identity in the Word of God and never wrestling with who you are or why God put you on this earth. Imagine the peace this would bring. It’s possible if we’ll go to God and find our identity in Him. In fact, one of the best ways to discover and study our identity in Christ is to read through Paul’s letters to the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians and Colossians; and every time you see two-word phrases such as…

  • in Christ.
  • in Him.
  • in whom.
  • in the beloved.

…highlight, circle or underline those phrases, because those two-word phrases describe who you are and what you have as a born-again believer. They describe who He is in us. There are more than 130 such occurrences, though 35 of them are the most significant, and they describe what God has already done for you and in you, in Christ. If you’ll do this, you will discover who you are in Him—and you will discover one of the most powerful ways to develop strong faith. [For more on how to do this, click here.]

Find Yourself in Him

Jesus modeled this for us when He stood up in the synagogue in Nazareth to read. The Scripture says:

And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears (Luke 4:17-21, KJV).

As Gloria Copeland has said, Jesus found Himself in the book! He found Himself in Isaiah 61—and He declared it. When we give voice to who we are in Christ, our identification with Christ is activated by our confession of faith. Declaring what the Word says is equivalent to us saying, “I am agreeing with God that I am who God says I am; I can have what God says I can have; and I can do what God says I can do.”

Be Transformed by Your Identity in Christ

Who better to get into agreement with than God?

Romans 10:9-10 (KJV) shows us “that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

In the same way Jesus found Himself in the book, when we find ourselves in the Book, it will make the Word come alive to us. The spirit of wisdom and revelation will take those two-word phrases from just being information and intellectual knowledge to becoming spiritual power in our lives. The spirit of wisdom and revelation will cause the words to become revelation, and revelation in our lives is transformative. Isn’t being transformed into the image of Christ what we want more than anything?

Kenneth Copeland has said that if you want all the “in Him, in Christ, in whom, etc.” scriptures to come alive for you, then take the “Ephesians 1 Prayer” and pray it every day. The Ephesians 1 Prayer comes from making a declaration of faith based on verses from Ephesians 1:17-23.

Father God,

I’m asking you to give to me the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You. I pray that the eyes of my understanding would be flooded with light, that I may know the hope of Your calling, what is the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints, what is the exceeding greatness of Your power toward us who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power which You worked in Christ, when You raised Him from the dead and sat Him at Your own right hand in heavenly places, far above all principality, power, might, dominion and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also that which is to come.

For You put all things under His feet, gave Him to be the head over all things to the Church, which is His body the fullness of Him that fills all in all.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Embrace Your Identity in Christ

The greatest need we will ever have is the spirit of wisdom and revelation, and according to the Scripture, this is what Paul prayed for the Ephesians—and it’s something we should pray for ourselves.

Paul wrote this to the Colossians as well saying, “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Colossians 1:9, KJV).

And Proverbs 4:7 tells us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Mark Hankins has said that every breakthrough in faith will come from a breakthrough in the spirit of wisdom and revelation. In other words, for your faith to grow and to go forward, there must be a breakthrough in revelation knowledge. And praying the Ephesians 1 prayer daily will unlock that for you.

Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you walk in the confidence He’s given to us? Or do you wrestle with knowing who you are, what God’s called you to do, and why you’re here on this earth? Six Signs You’re Not Trusting In the Love of God

6 signs you're not trusting the love of god blog post

God loves you. Do you believe that? If you ever sat through Sunday school as a child, you probably believe that on a simple level. However, now that you’re an adult, ask yourself that question again, considering all your life experiences and religious training: Do you believe, truly believe, that God loves you? Do you trust the love of God when you get up in the morning and lay down at night? Do you know it when you’re at work and when you’re at home, when you’re surrounded by fellow believers and when you’re all alone?

This is important, because how you answer that question affects so much. It will change the way you interact with your heavenly Father, your family and even yourself. First John 4:7-10 explains the depth of God’s love this way:

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

God’s love for you—and every other person—is the reason He sacrificed His Son for mankind. It is also why He sent the Holy Spirit as a gift to the Body of Christ. Need more proof? Just read 1 John 4:13-16: “And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us. Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.”

You can never get away from God’s love. No matter what you have or haven’t done in your life, His love is always with you. However, you can greatly hinder the effect of His love in your life by living and acting like you don’t trust in His love. Below are six telltale signs that you are not really trusting in the love of God.

1. When You Blame God During Challenges

It’s easy to profess that God loves you when everything is going well, but what about when challenges come? That’s when you may find yourself turning on God and asking, “Why did You let this happen to me?”

That isn’t a new response. It’s the same one the disciples had when a storm threatened to topple their boat. “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” they asked (Mark 4:38).

If they had truly understood God’s love for them, they would have recognized that: 1) Jesus, the Messiah, was with them, and 2) The storm was no problem for Him to handle.

James 1:2-8 tells us to handle crises like this:

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.  So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

When challenges come, you don’t want to have divided loyalty, or as the King James Version puts it, be “double minded.” You want to trust in the love of God’to help you overcome every obstacle.

2. When You Blame Your Lack of Faith on Your Humanity

You’ve heard believers say, “We’re only human.” What a false statement! You may have been “only human” before you were born again, but as a born-again believer in the Most High God, you are more than “only human.” Ephesians 2:10 calls you “God’s masterpiece…. created anew.” You are a new creation, and the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead now lives in you.

Right before His death, Jesus prayed this for every believer:

I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me. Father, I want these whom you have given me to be with me where I am. Then they can see all the glory you gave me because you loved me even before the world began! (John 17:20-24)

Never again consider yourself “only human.” You are a born-again human, and there’s a difference. God now lives in you with all of His power and glory, and that is anything but normal. It is a miracle!

3. When You Allow Fear Into Your Life

Love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8, NKJV). Think about that: God’s love for you—His provision for you, His care for you, His interest in you—never fails. However, if you allow fear into your life, then you are denying that love. And when you deny that love, you open the door for the enemy to wreak havoc. Fear can create the double-mindedness we talked about earlier. It’s the double-mindedness that says, “Sure, God loves me,” and then thinks, but maybe He wants me sick. It’s also the double-mindedness that says, “Yes, God loves me, but maybe He’s mad at me because I haven’t done (fill in the blank).”

However, if you’ll turn away from fear and toward God and His Word, you won’t just manage fear (i.e., keep it at bay); you’ll expel it (1 John 4:18).

4. When You Deny Your Right

You probably know Jesus as your Savior, but have you considered that He is your advocate, too? First John tells you that when you fall short—and everyone falls short—that you have an advocate with the Father. Jesus doesn’t fill that position grudgingly or resentfully. No, He paid the ultimate price to hold that position for you and every other believer. That’s the right—your right—that He made possible. So, when you need forgiveness, you can simply and earnestly ask for it in Jesus’ Name, and you will receive it. Praise God!

5. When You Embrace Hate and Unforgiveness

First John 2:9-11 tells us just how important it is to walk in forgiveness: “If anyone claims, ‘I am living in the light,’ but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble.   But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.”

Jesus paid the price needed to free you from the enemy’s hold on your life, but there are instances when you can invite the enemy back into your life. We covered one way above—by embracing fear—but there is another way—by entertaining hate and unforgiveness. It’s only when we walk in love with others that we can enjoy the peace and security of the love of God.

6. When You Give in to Reckless Words

Jesus implied just how important the words we speak are when He said, “The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me” (John 14:10b). He only spoke what the Father told Him to speak. Being fully God and fully human, He could have chosen to give in to human urgings and speak without faith, but He didn’t…and neither should you. Reckless words often lead to double-mindedness, fear, unforgiveness and turning against God.

If you find yourself doing anyone of these six things, take a moment to repent before God, and ask Him to give you a deeper revelation of His love for you. You must do more than simply will yourself not to give into these tendencies. You must first accept God’s unparalleled and all-encompassing love. He loves you. Period. As His child, He is on your side 100 percent of the time. By clinging to His Word, you can build your faith and change your life to reflect the love of God and be a beacon of light to a hurting and disillusioned world.

7 Ways To Worship God In Spirit And In Truth

7 ways to worship in spirit and truth blog post

“But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way.” –John 4:23

As believers, we’re called to worship God “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23). But you may wonder, “How can I worship God daily? How can I worship God at home? How can I worship God wherever I am?” The good news is, you can—and worship is a powerful spiritual exercise in any believer’s life. It played a vital role in the Israelites’ winning their first battle after entering the Promise Land (Joshua 6). It was instrumental in Paul and Silas’ release from prison (Acts 16:24-26). It reflected the thanksgiving and heartfelt praise of God’s people throughout all 150 psalms, repeatedly allowing them to express their nagging fears, their miraculous feats and their enduring faith in the Him. These examples and more show just what can happen when God’s people worship Him “in spirit and in truth.”

What Does Worshiping ‘in Truth’ Mean?

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8, NKJV).
The first step in understanding how to worship is recognizing whom to worship. We worship the Father in spirit and in truth (John 4:23). When we worship in truth, we don’t worship empty philosophies that come from the world’s way of thinking (Colossians 2:8). Instead, we focus on the message and the truth of Jesus Christ. “Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts” (Colossians 3:16).

Man’s way of thinking is not God’s way of thinking (Isaiah 55:8). In order to worship in truth, we must know the truth, which is found in the Bible. We must continually renew our minds to the Word of God by spending time studying every day (Romans 12:2). When our minds are renewed to what He says is truth (and not the world), we will be able to come to Him and worship Him in spirit and in truth.

Why Preparing for Worship Is Important

“Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize. When you meet together, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you” (1 Corinthians 14:26).

The beauty of worship occurs in community with other like-minded believers. There is a depth and strength that comes when believers join together in worship, much like the Israelites did around Jericho and like Paul and Silas did in prison. In 1 Corinthians 14:26, Paul explains aspects of orderly worship. While orderly worship is not the immediate topic here, this scripture shows the importance of preparing for worship. The one singing needs to select the song, practice and prepare his or her heart before the service begins. Likewise, the one teaching needs to prepare to receive and deliver the message before the service.

The responsibility to prepare for worship doesn’t just fall to the worship team and the pastor. We should all come to the house of worship prepared—whether you are singing, teaching, preaching, speaking, prophesying, serving or receiving. Sunday worship is not a time to be entertained and expecting to be served, but it’s a time when God’s children gather to give Him honor and praise and to be strengthened.

So, how do you prepare for worship on Sunday? You prepare by getting your heart ready. Use the night before or early morning before the service to seek the Lord by practicing private worship, reading the Bible and praying. Fix your thoughts on the truth of Jesus and all He has done for you. Pray for the service and ask the Lord to help you receive from Him. You may even want to set aside a special time in your schedule to prepare for weekly worship.

7 Ways to Express Worship

For some, expressing themselves in worship can be uncomfortable, especially if they are new Christians. You go to some churches, and the congregation never stands up. They don’t sing, but they just sit and listen to the worship music. Others may sing but they don’t play instruments. Still others will be waving their hands, shouting and running around as the band plays every kind of instrument. Which way to worship is correct?

Well, the Bible outlines seven different types of worship, and they are all appropriate, with each having its place. Let’s examine them:

1. Barak–To kneel, to bless God, to bow down

“He will rescue the poor when they cry to him; he will help the oppressed, who have no one to defend them…. Long live the king! May the gold of Sheba be given to him, may the people always pray for him and bless him all day long.” –Psalm 72:12-15

Barak means to bow down to, or kneel before, the Lord. It communicates that the Lord holds a place of importance and helps us remember just how great He is. Barak is not done out of a begging attitude but rather an expectant attitude, because the Lord is more than willing and able to move on our behalf.

2. Halal–To be clear, to shine, to boast, to show, to rave, to celebrate, to be clamorously foolish

“David appointed the following Levites to lead the people in worship before the Ark of the Lord—to invoke his blessings, to give thanks, and to praise the Lord, the God of Israel.” –1 Chronicles 16:4

Halal appears more than 110 times in the Old Testament. It translates as to shine, boast, rave about, celebrate or even to be clamorously foolish. Can you imagine a more wondrous noise raving about about all the Lord is and all He has done?

3. Shabach–To shout loudly, to command

“Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise!” –Psalm 47:1

Shabach means to shout loudly or command. Of course, it isn’t simply about being loud. Its focus is to worship the Lord with one’s whole being.

4. Tehillah–To sing praises, singing out of the spirit spontaneously

“But you are holy, O You Who dwell in [the holy place where] the praises of Israel [are offered].” –Psalm 22:3, AMPC

Tehillah means to sing unrehearsed, unplanned praises to the Lord. It can include adding words to an existing song or even singing in the spirit to the Lord.

5. Towdah–Extending hands, acting out of thanksgiving for what has or will be done

“But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God.” –Psalm 50:23

Towdah is a type of worship that includes extending your hands or raising them in thanksgiving for something that has been done or will be done.

6. Yadah– Extending the hands vigorously

“After consulting the people, the king appointed singers to walk ahead of the army, singing to the Lord and praising him for his holy splendor. This is what they sang: ‘Give thanks to the Lord; his faithful love endures forever!’”
–2 Chronicles 20:21

Yadah means to extend your hands vigorously as in complete surrender.

7. Zamar – To touch the strings, to make music with instruments, mostly rejoicing

“Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp! Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!” –Psalm 150:3-6

Zamar means to touch the strings. It involves rejoicing and making music to the Lord.

Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you about the seven ways to worship in spirit and in truth. How can you incorporate them into your personal and corporate worship? Remember, praising God is to be on our lips, or spoken (Isaiah 57:19), and we are to do it continually as a sacrifice (Hebrews 13:15). God promises that when we praise and worship Him, He inhabits those praises (Psalm 22:3), and it gives us strength to defeat our enemy (Psalm 8:2).
