A skilled airplane pilot follows his operator’s checklist every time he gets ready to take a trip. It contains instructions on preparing the aircraft for a safe venture into the skies. In the same way a pilot prepares for flight, Christians should prepare daily by keeping their spiritual checklist close at hand.
What is a spiritual checklist? A spiritual checklist contains information and instructions to please God and to live the Christian life.
Where do you find it? A spiritual checklist is found throughout God’s Word. Read your Bible and write down the instructions and promises that will help you in all the different areas of life. Hearing God is our way to navigate life and keep us from running into an emotional dead end.
Throughout the Scriptures, we learn how to worship God (John 4:24), how to be a good parent (Proverbs 22:6), what to do in times of trouble (Proverbs 3:5-6), and God’s perspective about death (Psalm 116:15).
A good place to find a ready-made spiritual checklist is on the first pages of the Kenneth Copeland Reference Bible. Brother Copeland offers these outlines to anyone serious about studying God’s Word.
Let’s discover how to create a spiritual checklist to soar in faith.
Follow the Spiritual Manual
Piloting an aircraft is exhilarating! Before the pilot does anything, the manual is read thoroughly, and a comprehensive checklist review ensures the plane is ready to fly.
A pilot must know what to do before the unexpected happens. In the middle of an emergency, it is not the time to read the manual for the first time. The pilot must be familiar with the procedures and, in the event of an aviation emergency, be prepared before anything unexpected happens in the air.
In the same way, becoming a victorious believer requires reading and studying God’s Word, which is a manual. You must understand what God says about the situations in your life. The Lord gave you everything you need to live a successful, godly life, and as you follow His ways, He will keep His promises to you (2 Peter 1:3).
Watch as Kenneth Copeland and Greg Stephens teach how to follow the owner’s manual.
Recognize God’s Voice
Just as a pilot must recognize the voice of the air traffic controller who is directing him to safety, you must recognize God’s voice, which directs you to safety.
It’s essential to follow your spiritual checklist because many voices are vying for your attention (1 Corinthians 14:10). Years ago, entertainers would mimic the voices of well-known government officials and popular singers. Some were so skilled at doing this that you couldn’t tell the imitation from the real singer.
The devil will try to imitate the voice of the Lord. He tries to sound like God. John taught believers to examine spiritual voices to determine their source. Use this test to differentiate the Spirit of Truth from the spirit of error: Every voice that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God (1 John 4:1-6).
Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice and a stranger’s voice they will not follow” (John 10:4-5). Recognize God’s voice and follow Him, not another voice.
Soar Above Fear
God has given you His Word to read and meditate on so you can soar above fear. Spending time with the Lord and referencing your spiritual checklist enables you to transcend natural limitations and rise above the fear of a troublesome situation (Isaiah 41:10).
Fear likes to show up when you are facing troubles of any kind. Living a Christian life doesn’t mean trouble will never come because “in this world you will have many troubles,” Jesus said. “But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
How do you overcome when trouble comes?
You overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of your testimony (Revelation 12:11). Don’t remain silent but speak God’s Word.
God wants to lift you above this world into His kingdom (Colossians 1:13) even while you continue to live in this world. Jesus said you can be bold because you live like Jesus in this world (1 John 4:17).
Start today by getting your spiritual checklist in order. Remember to include scriptures that remind you of God’s faithfulness and His promises to care for you. Buckle your seat belt, go over your spiritual checklist and be ready to lift off into the limitless frontiers of flying with God!
