Let’s get real about Halloween. Each year the world celebrates Halloween with almost no understanding of the darkness behind the holiday. For many, the idea of dressing up in a costume is a way to celebrate and spend time with family and friends, and they give no thought to the significance of the day. Cute costumes, decorations and Halloween parties seem like fun; meanwhile the devil deceives people by using Halloween to draw people into darkness away from God’s light.
Jesus knew the believer would live in a world of darkness, and He prayed for the Father’s help. “I’m not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one” (John 17:15). In the midst of a dark world, you can walk in God’s light.
How do you walk in God’s light as a believer?
Ephesians 5:8-11 says, “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.”
Before you made Jesus your Lord, you were full of darkness, but now you can walk and live as one of His people of light! Keep reading to learn how to walk in God’s light this Halloween.
Overcome Darkness With Light
For believers, this season is not one of darkness; instead, it’s a reminder that we serve the God of light who has overcome all the works of darkness (1 John 3:8).
The Bible introduces Jesus as the light by saying, “The Word [Jesus] gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:4-5).
As a Christian, you have authority in Christ to overcome darkness (Luke 10:19). Two of your most powerful weapons are the Word of God and the Name of Jesus. When you speak to darkness and tell it to leave in the Name of Jesus, that darkness must go (James 4:7). Every believer has the authority in Christ to resist the devil in their life and he must flee!
This Halloween, choose to take authority over any works of darkness in your life or your family’s lives and be a light, or witness, to others.
4 Ways To Shine God’s Light at Halloween
- Discuss how your family can be a light to friends and neighbors
- Display decorations such as pumpkins and fall leaves that honor the Lord
- Get involved in your church’s fall activities or find a church where your family can participate in their fall activities
- Start a family tradition in your home centered around a particular meal or craft.
On Oct. 31, make sure that what you are doing pleases the Lord and walk as a child of the light.
Light Always Wins
Those who celebrate Halloween may try to glorify darkness, but the truth is that light always wins! The Bible makes it clear: “This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light and there is no darkness in Him at all” (1 John 1:5).
Walking with God doesn’t mean there aren’t challenges and moments when life seems dim or dark, but the light of God, the truth of His Word, and the wisdom from the Holy Spirit will overcome any darkness in your life!
Whatever way you spend Oct. 31, make sure you honor the Lord. Live your life as a witness of the light of God that will always overcome evil. Let the light of Jesus’ love shine through you and take opportunities to share your light with others.
As the world celebrates Halloween by displaying skeletons and ghosts, choose to spend your time filling your heart with God’s Word so His light can shine brightly from you to others. Let the world see your good deeds which come from God’s light on the inside of you. His light in you will overcome darkness around you. And that light will always win!
