6 Fear-Defeating Truths To Keep You Safe Inside
Just when you thought things couldn’t get crazier…along comes Breaking News!
And whatever the headline is, it’s usually something that has the potential to rock your world with fear—no matter how far away the trouble is.
With all its emotional ups and downs, maybe it’s time to draw a line in the sand and tell the world, “Enough!”
Better yet, what if you could build yourself a wall—a Great Wall of BLESSING—something that could keep ALL the fear and panic out and only let God’s goodness in?
God has a supernaturally backed, guaranteed way of getting you out of the fear zone and into the comfort and safety of His BLESSING. But you need to know: God’s not pushy, so He won’t force any of this on you. It’s all on you. You decide. You choose.
The question is: How do you want your life to play out?
How do you want this weekend’s date to turn out? How do you want your marriage to turn out? How do you want your job interview or retirement to turn out? What about your pregnancy, your kids, your vacation plans, your upcoming surgery, your family’s business? There’s no limit to how worry-free your life can be.
From the end of your day to the end of your life—you get to choose!
Moses recounts the choice God gave the people of Israel (Deuteronomy 30:19):
“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between BLESSINGS and curses…. Oh, that you would choose life!”
The opportunity God offered Israel for a life full of BLESSING was the same He had given to Adam and Eve, which is the same available to you. We know what Adam and Eve chose, as well as Israel—and it didn’t turn out so well. They gave in to the devil’s lies and forfeited God’s best.
In fact, everyone we read about in the Bible who lost out in life came up short because of their wrong choices. They got played by the devil. He talked them into panic and worry, and out of God’s goodness and BLESSING.
Maybe you’ve lost out in some ways. Maybe you’ve bought into some lies.
Again, the choice is yours—who are you going to believe?
Here are six fear-defeating truths from God’s Word that will shut down the devil’s lies and help you build a Great Wall of BLESSING, so you can live safely inside the boundaries of God’s goodness.
Truth No. 1: You Have an Enemy
“Satan replied to the LORD, ‘Yes, but Job has good reason to fear [You]. You have always put a wall of protection around him and his home and his property. You have made him prosper in everything he does. Look how rich he is!’”–Job 1:9-10
The Great Wall of BLESSING you’ll hear Kenneth Copeland speak about from time to time is not some spiritual theory or heavenly pie-in-the-sky idea. It’s a down-to-earth reality—just ask the devil, your No. 1 enemy.
Satan’s greatest frustration has always been this “wall of protection”—The Great Wall of BLESSING—that God designed to keep him at a safe distance, and from wreaking havoc on our lives.
There’s no way for the enemy to penetrate that wall unless we choose to listen to his lies, buy in to his fear tactics, and let our guard down (John 8:44).
Basically, the devil is a con artist!
That’s why the apostle Peter tells us to…
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith” (1 Peter 5:8-9).
Satan lied his way into Adam and Eve’s garden. He has lied his way into Church. And if you let him, he will lie his way into your life. Once he’s in, he will try talking you out of every one of God’s BLESSINGS (John 10:10), bringing your wall down brick by brick.
The truth is—it doesn’t have to play out that way!
Jesus’ younger brother James reminds us that all we have to do is “humble [ourselves] before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee” (James 4:7).
You have the power—you have the choice—to cause things in your life to turn out the way YOU say, the way GOD says, and not how your enemy says!
Truth No. 2: Fear Is A Thief
“What I [Job] always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true.” –Job 3:25
After going through the wringer—the loss of all his children, his wealth and his health—Job admitted to some friends that he was through, finished. He wished he’d never been born. He wished he would die. Then, he confessed that everything he had ever feared might happen to him, did.
The Job who had been a shining example of faith and love for God was now in the pit of depression, and it came down to the fact that there were some things he was afraid of.
How about you? Do you have a short list of fears? Things that, if they happened, would totally wreck your world?
Whether it’s a fear of bugs, heights or being alone, fear is a thief. It’s a dangerous weapon in the hands of your enemy. Fear can neutralize your faith and bring The Great Wall of BLESSING crashing down around you.
The truth is—faith (in God) and fear (of anything) cannot coexist. It’s one or the other.
Again, it comes back to choosing.
Jesus confronted His disciples one day for this very reason (Mark 4:40). When it seemed they were all about to die in a sinking boat—with Jesus right there with them—they lost it on Him!
His response shocked them: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
You cannot have faith in God and fear of your circumstances, and expect The Great Wall of BLESSING to remain intact. It doesn’t work that way.
Truth No. 3: Jesus Defeated the Master Fear
“I [Job] I have no peace, no quietness. I have no rest; only trouble comes.” –Job 3:26
With all kinds of fear running rampant in the earth—and in our heads—it’s reassuring to know that Jesus took out THE fear of all fears. He defeated what Brother Copeland calls the “master” fear.
Hebrews 2:14-15 explains it like this:
“Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.”
The root fear, or the master fear, is fear of dying. When Jesus defeated death (1 Corinthians 15:54-57), there no longer was a reason for us to fear it—or anything else, for that matter. That, in turn, empowered us to silence the enemy’s lies and keep him on the other side of our Great Wall.
There are at least 365 references in the Bible where God tells us to “fear not!” or “don’t be afraid!” If you think about it, that’s one reminder for every day of the year!
Here are some of those references…
God to Abraham—Genesis 15:1
Moses to Israel—Exodus 20:20
God to Joshua—Joshua 1:8
David to Solomon—1 Chronicles 28:20
Jesus about life and the future—Matthew 6:25, 34
Paul about slavery to fear—Romans 8:15
Truth No. 4: God’s Word Separates You From Fear
“The word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit between joint and marrow.” –Hebrews 4:12
When you’re faced with challenging situations and it’s time to make a decision and draw a line, there’s no better way to do it than with the help of God’s Word.
God’s Word exposes truth from lie and separates good from evil, BLESSINGS from curses. Jesus—who is the Word (John 1:1-5)—said, “The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are spirit and life” (John 6:63, AMPC).
When you’re choosing between life or death, BLESSING or curse, you cannot choose “life” without choosing words of life. So, it’s only by connecting to God’s Word that you can build a Wall of BLESSING about yourself.
Mark 5:25-34 gives account of a woman Jesus encountered early on in His ministry, a woman who literally connected to the Word.
The woman was slowly bleeding to death, with no hope for a medical cure. But from the moment she heard about Jesus, she was determined to reach out to Him. And when she finally caught up with Him—she pressed through the crowd, came up from behind and managed to touch the fringe on the bottom of His robe. Instantly, she was healed!
Like this woman, as you determine to draw near to God’s Word, the life and power of His Word will literally separate you from the devil’s lies, his fear tactics and the curse.
Truth No. 5: Love Drives Out Fear
“We know (understand, recognize, are conscious of, by observation and by experience) and believe (adhere to and put faith in and rely on) the love God [has] for us.” –1 John 4:16 (AMPC)
How convinced are you that God loves you?
It’s important to think that through, because your level of confidence in God’s love for you directly affects how vulnerable you are to fear—and to how well your Great Wall of BLESSING will hold up under the barrage of the devil’s lies against you.
The Apostle John goes on to explain why:
“There is no fear in love [dread does not exist], but full-grown (complete, perfect) love turns fear out of doors and expels every trace of terror!” (1 John 4:18, AMPC).
Though Job was blessed by God, he wasn’t convinced of God’s love for him because he was constantly making sacrifices to God on behalf of his children, afraid that at any moment God would get offended and destroy them (Job 1:4-5).
Likewise, the people of Israel were also unsure of God’s love, even though He had rescued them from Egypt and provided for them miraculously—food coming out of heaven, water coming out of rocks, clothes and shoes never wearing out, no one getting sick. In spite of all these acts of love, they were convinced God would let them die.
Maybe you have a little uncertainty about God’s love.
Brother Copeland once found himself in that place. He was dealing with depression. One scripture in particular helped separate him from that uncertainty—James 1:5 (AMPC):
“If any of you is deficient…let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him.”
The point: God’s not out to find fault. God is Love (1 John 4:16), and Love is not a faultfinder.
In fact, one day, when Brother Copeland was at a low point, his wife, Gloria, walked over to where he was sitting, placed her hands on his shoulders and said, “Kenneth, I’m quite sure Jesus finds no fault in you, and neither do I.” In that moment, the depression on him broke.
Believe in God’s love—more than Satan’s lies—and it will drive all fear away!
Truth No. 6: Fear Wants Your Head Space
“Beloved, I [desire] above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” –3 John 2 (KJV)
Now that you’re aware of the devil’s strategy of using lies and fear to hammer away at your Great Wall of BLESSING, understand that most days you will have to face him on the battlefield of your mind, where he will try to talk you out of God’s love for you.
When the lies start flying at you from every direction, here’s a powerful countermeasure from the wisdom and experience of the Apostle Paul:
“Demolish every deceptive fantasy that opposes God and break through every arrogant attitude that is raised up in defiance of the true knowledge of God [His love]…. capture, like prisoners of war, every thought and insist that it bow in obedience to [Jesus]” (2 Corinthians 10:5, TPT).
We learn from Scripture—when Job got his head space clear, his thinking in line with the truth about God, and his mind off himself—he was prompted by God to pray for his friends who had actually showed up to comfort him. As soon as he did, breakthrough came, and BLESSING flooded his life, even more so than before!
If you want to take God’s advice and choose life—a healthy, prosperous life with The Great Wall of BLESSING securely in place—then you need to know these six fear-defeating truths to keep you safely inside God’s love. Then, no matter what comes your way, you’ll be rooted and grounded in truth, not fear.
And where your life goes from there—well, you choose!
