What if you could keep one commandment, like the Commandment of Love, and fulfill all the other commandments?
You can!
When Jesus came, He proclaimed a new way to live. It was based on the commandment of love, as the one commandment that fulfills all the other commandments.
Jesus said, “So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are My disciples” (John 13:34-35).
What are some practical ways you can demonstrate God’s commandment of love toward others?
- Be respectful and confer value on others
- Prefer others above yourself
- Listen as others speak
- Be present as you converse with one another
- Avoid distractions and avoid strife
- Speak kindly to others, verbally pointing out their good qualities
- Demonstrate that you enjoy the company of others
- Give gifts, money or gift cards
- Help someone complete a task
- Invite them to attend church with you.
Jesus perfectly demonstrated how to love others by what He said and how He lived His life. He even poured out His life as an offering for others (Matthew 26:28), so that whoever believes in Him would be saved (Romans 10:13).
Paul wrote in Romans 13:8-10: “Owe nothing to anyone—except for your obligation to love one another. If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
“For the commandments say, ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.’ These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.”
The commandment of love may sound easy, but it must flow from your heart and your relationship with God. When you are born again, the love of God is shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5) and that love controls, urges and impels you (2 Corinthians 5:14, AMPC).
Practice walking in love every day. Don’t get caught up in the things of life and focus only on yourself and your goals. You must focus on God, and then others. In that way, you will be keeping the commandment of love and fulfilling all the other commandments.
