Overcome this evil world and achieve victory in your life by understanding How Does Faith Work and putting it into practice today.
Everyone enjoys a movie or a sports game in which the underdog comes out on top and triumphs. Did you know that God has planned for you to triumph in life? Second Corinthians 2:14 says, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ” (NKJV).
But triumphing in Christ is not automatic. It doesn’t just happen. First John 5:4 explains how you triumph, how you achieve victory in life: “For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.”
You can achieve victory in your life and defeat this evil world by understanding How Does Faith Work and putting it to work in your life today.
1. Faith comes from God.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;it is the gift of God.” –Ephesians 2:8 (NKJV)
When you heard the gospel and responded with your heart, believing that Jesus is the Son of God, you were born of God. Born-again men and women have the faith of God. Faith was invested in your spirit when eternal life was ministered to you and you were born again. Romans 12:3 says, “Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.”
Every born-again believer has been given the faith of God. That “measure of faith” (Romans 12:3) gives you the power to be an overcomer in this world. “Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God…. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world…. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:1, 4-5, NKJV). You may not be overcoming right now, and things may be overcoming you, but in the eyes of God, you are an overcomer because you are born again. God didn’t save you by His grace and leave you to overcome on your own. No, He gave you His faith—faith that works, faith that produces results, faith that is living on the inside of you. Your faith can work effectively because it comes from God.

2. Faith is received.
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” –Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
Faith doesn’t come by sitting around and thinking about your problems; faith comes by spending time hearing the Word of God. Every time you hear the anointed, preached Word of God, faith comes. It rises up on the inside of you. It makes what seems impossible in your life suddenly possible (Mark 9:23). That’s why it’s important to make time in your day to hear the Word—when you’re driving to work or cooking meals, taking a walk or at any other time in the day.
Choose to turn off the television shows or movies. Choose to close your social media apps. Decide instead to invest in your future by spending time listening to the Word. When you have spent time feeding on the Word of God, you’ll receive direction from the Lord. You’ll know what to do. Your direction won’t be based on what you see, experience or feel; your direction will be based on the leading of the Holy Spirit inside you. Receiving the Word of God and believing it puts you into position to release your faith.
3. Faith is released.
“But we continue to preach because we have the same kind of faith the psalmist had when he said, ‘I believed in God, so I spoke.’” –2 Corinthians 4:13
To release your faith, you speak words. In the same way you were saved, by believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth (Romans 10:9), you release your faith for other areas of your life. God has promised you many things in His Word including healing, protection, provision and being filled with the Spirit. You can locate these promises from God in the Bible and speak them out of your mouth.

But what about other questions in your life? Like where do you live? Where do you work? Where do you go to school? The Holy Spirit will lead and guide you by your spirit; your spirit is a safe guide when you have been hearing the Word of God. When you come to a situation and don’t know what to do, ask God for wisdom (James 1:5). When you hear from Him, you can declare those words! Mark 11:22-24 says, “Then Jesus said to the disciples, ‘Have faith in God.I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.”
When you release faith by speaking words, you empower your angels to go to work on your behalf (Psalm 91:11-12). You have been given faith, the God kind of faith, and it works because you release it.
4. Faith is developed.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” –Hebrews 12:1-2
Jesus is the Author of your faith, and He is also the Developer of your faith. Just like anything else in life, it takes time to develop in faith. You don’t go to the gym one day and expect six-pack abs the next day. For faith to be developed, it takes time spent in the Word and time spent speaking the Word; and it also takes corresponding action. It’s the doers of the Word who are blessed (James 1:22). And faith without works is dead (James 2:26).
Don’t draw back once you’ve heard from God what to do. Faith requires obedience. Hearing from God is only part of the faith equation; you must also do what He says to do. All of heaven backs you when you step out in obedience to God. God will always lead you to act on your faith, to put it into motion. It’s like building muscle—every time you exercise your faith, it grows, strengthens and develops more.
