You don’t have to be weighed down with the cares of life; you can cast your cares on God by changing your thoughts.

Philippians 4:8 says, “I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse” (MSG).

In the same way you change the channel of a television program to something else, you can change your thoughts. In this post, learn how to cast your cares and change your thoughts from the worst to the best, from the ugly to the beautiful, and from things to curse to things to praise.

Cast Your Cares: Think the Best, Not the Worst

When a problematic situation arises, do you cast your cares by changing your thoughts? Do you think of the worst possible scenario? When you don’t hear back from someone, do you think something has happened to them?

Since we have instant access to news and reports from all over the world, we are constantly inundated with worst-case scenarios flooding our phones and inboxes. What can you do to think the best, not the worst?

When something happens in your life and your mind is flooded with negative images, you can stop and pray for the person or situation. Your prayers are not limited by location. God invites us to pray for all people, asking Him to help them (1 Timothy 2:1).

When you invite God into the situation, He can turn it around. He thinks the best, not the worst. When you know God is working on a problem, you can cast every care on Him.

Cast Your Cares: Think of the Beautiful, Not the Ugly

You can be tempted to focus on the ugly parts of life or human nature rather than casting your cares on the Lord. When someone cuts you off in traffic, how do you respond? When someone speaks negatively about you, do you think about it or dwell on it for long periods of time? At any moment, you can look at the news on your phone and see people treating other people with disdain.

Instead of judging others, Paul reminds us that we are to serve one another in love. “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’” (Galatians 5:14).

Understand that everyone is facing their challenges. You don’t know what happened to someone that morning or what family or job situations they are facing. Choosing to find the beautiful parts of a person is choosing to love your neighbor as yourself.

Cast Your Cares: Think On Things To Praise, Not Things To Curse

You can cast your cares on the Lord by praising Him. Psalm 9:1 says, “I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.” Focusing on the Lord rather than cursing what is going on around you will alter your perspective.

God is good and has done wonderful things for you. He sent His Son to die for you so you can spend eternity with Him and live a blessed life on earth (John 3:16-17). He makes the rain come down and the sunshine fill the sky so you can enjoy life (Matthew 5:45).

When you are tempted to think about things to curse or complain, focus instead on the Lord and praise Him. Begin by thanking Him for all the wonderful things He has done for you.

First Peter 5:7 says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” Instead of allowing the cares of life to stop you in your tracks or get you off track, you can change the channel in your mind, filling it with things that are true, noble, compelling and gracious; and experience God’s love for you.
