What does it mean to serve God in our country? America’s first colonists left England in search of a new world where they would have the right to worship God and serve Him. Yet, with those rights come choices. You can choose how you spend your time and your money, in addition to choosing where to live and work.
From the very beginning, the concept of nations was God’s idea. “From one person God made all nations who live on earth, and he decided when and where every nation would be” (Acts 17:26, CEV). Thank God for our country! We should be open to opportunities God brings across our paths to serve Him and the people in our nation.
Let’s look at several ways you can serve God in our country.
Vote.
By now, you realize how crucial voting is to serving God in our country.
You have the right to vote for the candidate of your choice and participate in the election process. Although no candidate is perfect and no position the candidate takes is without debate, your vote counts!
We owe it to our ancestors and all those who sacrificed for us, to maintain the right to vote, and to be informed on the issues and how the candidates stand on each one. Look for the evidence of the fruit of the spirit in their lives (Galatians 5:22-23).
And if you need help, VICTORY Channel has plenty of programming to help explain how to change our nation.
Run for a government office.
Have you ever thought about running for a government office? Can you see yourself as the mayor or a council member in your area? Do you have some good ideas and a passionate commitment to improve the conditions for your city’s residents and businesses? Do you want a change in the government?
One way to achieve change is to be a voice for it. Solomon wrote, “When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice” (Proverbs 29:2). God has given you a voice, a voice of faith and power, so use it for the good of government by running for a government office.
The Bible makes it clear that government workers are serving God in their work. Romans 13:6 says, “Pay your taxes, too, for these same reasons. For government workers need to be paid. They are serving God in what they do.”
Decide today to run for a government office in your area and be part of the righteous who are in authority.
Join the military.
One branch of the military service advertises that it’s for “a few good men.” That could be you—a “good” man or woman. Many people join the military to afford a good education. That’s a good reason, but here’s a better one.
Join the military to serve God in our nation and defend the Constitution of the United States. Please stand up for what you believe and help this nation attain its goals of justice, liberty and freedom.

Be a first responder.
A first responder is someone ready to respond at the first sign of trouble. It could be a firefighter, an ambulance driver, a diver or simply a concerned citizen.
In 2025, Texas suffered a devastating loss of life due to a natural event, an unexpected flood with 24-foot swells near Kerrville, which killed more than 100 people, including children.
The first responders were on the scene to rescue those who were on top of houses and stuck, hanging onto trees, waiting for help to arrive. They continued to work tirelessly to find those who were missing.
Riley Stephenson with KCM was one of the first responders who arrived on the scene in Kerrville to check on our KCM Partners in the area.
Many such events occur throughout the United States each year due to weather, fire or danger; and first responders are always ready and willing to help. Enroll in first-responder training to participate in the rewarding experience of saving someone’s life.
Pray.
Another way you can serve God and our nation is to pray. God’s Word says we are to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
Don’t let your prayers revolve only around the people you know. Allow yourself to serve others by interceding on their behalf for their needs. First Timothy 2:1 says, “I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.”
Don’t let the idea of praying for everyone all at once discourage you. Start by praying for one government leader, like the mayor or the president, and then expand to include more leaders, like members of Congress or Supreme Court judges. You’ll find your prayer time is rewarded by seeing God’s hand guiding the nation.
First Timothy 2:2-3 says, “Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. This is good and pleases God our Savior.” Your prayers for those in authority are directly tied to living a peaceable life.
When you consider these five ways to serve God in our nation, what can you do today? Register to vote? Inquire about local government elections in which you could volunteer to help? Run for a political office? Support the military or first responders with words of encouragement, or consider paying for their meal. Everyone can pray! Choose today to serve God in our nation!
