Create a strong, loving family established in God by following these 4 Characteristics of a Faith-Filled Mother.
Anyone who is a mother will tell you that motherhood is not easy! Being a mother comes with challenges like sleepless nights, worry over a teenager’s decisions, and mixed feelings accompanying their children’s transition from childhood to independent adulthood.
You were never meant to be a mother without God’s help. He has equipped you to raise your children to be happy and successful. No matter the challenges that come your way, putting your faith in God and His Word will help you draw on the wisdom of God for every situation you face. God says, “I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let you down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]” (Hebrews 13:5, AMPC).
You can experience joy and satisfaction as a mother, as you help your children navigate the seasons of their lives, if you focus on applying these 4 Characteristics of a Faith-Filled Mother.
Characteristic #1 – Unwavering Love for God
“We love Him [God] because He first loved us.” –1 John 4:19 (NKJV)
The most important characteristic of a faith-filled mother is an unwavering love for God. Your love for God is based on the love God has for you. First John 4:16 says, “We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love.”
How do you develop in the love God has for you? That’s simple. Spend time with Him in His Word and in prayer. Daily take time to read your Bible and fellowship with God, your Father, in prayer. Prayer is simply talking to God and communing with Him.
As you spend time with God, your faith will grow. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17). When you read the Word and speak it, you are growing in faith. You are becoming a faith-filled mother!
God loves you. His love never fails. He forgives and wipes out every mistake, and He will never leave you to face your problems alone. God will help you, stand beside you, guide you and comfort you. Knowing God’s love produces an unwavering love for God.
Let this be your declaration: “I love God, and God loves me. Every day, I am forgiven and I have another opportunity to be a faith filled mother!”

Characteristic #2 – Determined Love for Your Children
“These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children.” –Titus 2:4
Of course, every mother loves her children. But having a determined love for your children is having an attitude that doesn’t give up, no matter the circumstances, and that kind of determination comes from the Lord.
As a mother, there are times when the stress of the moment can cause you to resent your child’s constant requirements, especially if you are a single mother and/or working a job. The crying, screaming or emphatic “No!” can easily cause you to feel frustrated. At these times, a faith-filled mother turns to God and His promises that are found in His Word. Take the initiative to believe God—that will help you cope with unnerving tantrums and everything else life throws at you. He promised He would never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 11:5).
At each stage of a child’s development, you will need to regroup in the way you interact with your child to express your love for them appropriately. As they grow, you must also grow in grace as you navigate each new season. Your capacity to forgive will be stretched. Your words and actions of love may change, but your ability to be gracious and merciful will demonstrate the unfailing love of God to them every day.
Remember, your child’s ultimate parent is the Lord, and He loves them with an unfailing love (Jeremiah 31:3). Put a smile on your face and know you are pleasing God by demonstrating a determined love for your children.
Characteristic #3 – Love and Appreciation for Your Responsibilities
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” –Colossians 3:23
Whether you spent time planning to be a mother, or you were surprised to learn you were pregnant, God knew you would be a mother. And He put within you the love and wisdom to be the mother He called you to be. Just like any other job you would do, you can work unto the Lord, pleasing Him in every part of motherhood. Psalm 37:5 says, “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.”
When you feed your infant or change their diaper, you can appreciate the privilege God gave you of being a mother. When you bathe them or rock them to sleep, you can remember that this child was given to you by the Lord. As they get older, and you prepare their lunches or take them to sports practice, you can remember that you are doing everything unto the Lord.
Determine to love your responsibilities and remember what God promised: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). God will help you love and help you appreciate the joy found in the responsibility of raising your child.
Characteristic #4 – Love for Yourself
“To acquire wisdom is to love yourself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.” –Proverbs 19:8
As a mother, it can be easy to take care of everyone but yourself. But when you love yourself, you are creating a model for your children to follow. They can learn to love God and themselves as they watch you!
Find time to take care of yourself spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Spiritually, pray in faith, expecting God to answer. Mentally, speak God’s Word over yourself and your family. Emotionally, look for ways to carve out some time just for yourself. Read a book, listen to a podcast, take a power nap, go outside for a leisurely walk, admire a flower, and determine to see yourself through God’s eyes. You are His chosen daughter! He loves you, so you must be valuable. He sees you as good, precious and priceless. Step back from the cares of life and enjoy loving yourself as God loves you (Jeremiah 31:3). You are valuable to God and your family.
When you apply these Four Characteristics of a Faith-Filled Mother to your life, you are establishing the framework for a strong, loving family whose ever-growing faith is in God. God called you to be a mother, and He planned victory for every season of your child’s life as you learn to listen and trust Him every step of the way.
