Brother Copeland’s Demonstration of Ancient Blood Covenants
At the 2020 Southwest Believers’ Convention, Kenneth Copeland and Greg Stephens performed an illustration of what would happen in ancient blood covenant rituals. Maybe you have seen this. And if so, you may have wondered: Did Kenneth Copeland actually cut his hand and drink blood? Let’s talk about it.
This was simply a visual illustration to support Brother Copeland’s teaching about how great our covenant with Jesus is.
We assure you that Brother Copeland did not actually cut his hand, and he did not drink any blood. Kenneth Copeland Ministries does not condone any such ritual.
Blood covenants were common in middle eastern culture when Jesus walked the earth, and some of these rituals are still performed to this day.
Understanding ancient covenant rituals help us to see how much greater the finished work of Jesus is, as well as the covenant we have with God through Him. He was our Passover Lamb and the perfect, forever sacrifice for sin. Because of Him, there is no reason to offer any other blood sacrifices or enter into any human blood covenants. His work is complete and perfect. (See John 1:29; 1 Corinthians 5:7; Hebrews 7:26-28, 10:19-23; 1 Peter 1:18-19.)
Today, we do commemorate Christ’s atoning work when we take Communion. We make much of the price Jesus paid for our sin with His body and blood. (See 1 Corinthians 11:23-26; Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-25; Luke 22:19-20; John 6:53.)
